Back to School Organizational Tips to Help You and Your Kids Get an “A”

The term “back to school” conjures up all sorts of thoughts and emotions. For kids, it means seeing old friends, breaking in new teachers and lots of homework. Parents think about school clothes shopping, packing lunches, carpooling, bus schedules and trying to get everyone out the door on time in the morning.

Juggling work, school, and multiple schedules can create stress and conflict for parents and kids alike. Bringing some organization into the “back to school” equation specifically for your kids, will benefit the whole family and help your kids start each day on time and ready for anything.

Mastering the Closet

Does your morning start with, “Mom, I can’t find my ____!”

Tailored-Living-Kids-Closet-AccessoriesAn organized closet is the best way to avoid losing clothes, uniforms, socks and shoes. A closet that is stuffed from floor to ceiling in a hopeless jumble makes getting ready a difficult and frustrating task for any age child. Getting the closet under control is crucial to hassle-free dressing in the morning. The first step is to clear out the closet. Get rid of clothes, shoes and uniforms that don’t fit or are no longer needed. Relocate books, toys, games or anything else that doesn’t belong in the closet. Make a realistic assessment of what needs to be in the closet and begin from that point. If it’s a shared closet, you’ll want to incorporate design features that allow each child to have their own space.

Here are some tips for organizing a kid’s closet to make it easy to get ready for school:

  • Install hanging rods at easy-reach level for your child
  • Multiple-tier rods provide more hanging space
  • Color coded hangers can separate school clothes/uniforms
  • Let each child have their own hanger colors if they share a closet
  • Folded tee shirts, jeans, shoes or purses can stack on open shelves
  • Smaller items like underwear, pajamas and socks can go into labeled bins
  • Maximize space with vertical shelves and store seldom used/seasonal items up high
  • Move seasonal clothing out of the closet until needed
  • Vertical shelves down the middle of a shared closet gives each child their own side for hanging
  • A laundry bin in the closet or nearby corrals dirty clothes
  • Use hooks for “quick grab” items like jackets or pajamas
  • Over-the-door shoe hangers can provide pockets for shoes, jewelry or hair accessories

Picking out the next day’s outfit the night before is a great help to speed up the morning. No one is too young to start using a valet rod to help get organized!

Maximizing the Bedroom

For a kid, the bedroom is about more than just sleeping. It’s their own personal space in the house. Signs on bedroom doors like NO GIRLS ALLOWED and NO ONE UNDER 21 PERMITTED show the importance of room ownership. As with the closet, an organized room will reduce stress and facilitate getting ready for school in the morning. Finding the perfect balance between what’s in the room and what’s in the closet will create a more comfortable and functional living space for your child.

Some of the basic needs of a school-aged child’s room include:

  • Additional dresser or chest of drawers for clothes
  • Storage for toys, games, treasures, and sports equipment
  • Designated space for backpacks, books and school supplies
  • A place to do homework and read
  • Space for a pet cage or aquarium

Tailored Living Kids Closet

Incorporating creative storage ideas like tall, vertical shelves, enclosed cabinets with drawers, under-bed storage, stacking bins and trunks will maximize room space and lessen the demands on the closet. This makes it easier for your child to stay neat and organized with allotted space for everything.

Tailored Living Partners with George to the Rescue, Renovating Amy Van Dyken’s Master Closet for Functionality and Accessibility

Six-time Olympic gold medalist, Amy Van Dyken, had her life change forever on June 6, 2014, when she suffered a spinal cord injury in an ATV accident that left her paralyzed from the waist down.
She is a constant inspiration to her Twitter and Instagram followers as she publically shares every step of her journey--the highs and lows, the challenges and the victories.
Her buoyant spirit shines through as she declares her intent to learn to drive, ride a bike and mountain climb. Amy believes “every day you take a breath is a blessing,” and “you can get through anything as long as you have a positive attitude.”
Tailored Living Partners with George to the Rescue
George to the Rescue is a national home improvement TV show that each week focuses on a home rescue for a deserving individual or group, nominated by friends and family that see a need and ask for help on their behalf.
Since the accident, Amy’s life has dramatically changed, and to help her progress in her new life, Tailored Living and its sister company, Budget Blinds, partnered with George to the Rescue to remodel her Scottsdale home with innovations that will improve her quality of life.
Tailored Living and George to the Rescue are presenting Amy with this surprise home renovation when she returns home after months of rehab. On September 10, Amy is a guest on the premiere of The Meredith Vieira Show where she’s expecting to talk about her accident. Instead, she’ll be surprised with the news of the renovation. The remodel reveal show of Amy actually moving into her newly-customized home will air the weekend of October 18 on NBC. (We’ll remind you of that date!)
Improving Day-to-Day Living
Tailored Living concentrated on making Amy’s day-to-day activities easier by designing a custom, shared master closet for her and her husband, Tom. Careful planning and innovative design will make dressing and wardrobe maintenance more convenient for Amy in her wheelchair while still being functional for Tom as well. Hang bars and wardrobe lifts will keep clothing within easy reach. Assorted storage features such as drawers, baskets and shelving will allow Amy to exercise her passion for fashion with easily accessible accessories such as jewelry, hats, shoes and purses.
Budget Blinds installed motorized window treatments with touch-of-a-button, hand-held remote control so Amy can easily maintain desired privacy and light levels throughout the home. Energy-efficient cellular shades were selected to match the home’s existing décor and Amy’s personal taste and style.
Home Franchise Concepts (HFC) is the parent company of Tailored Living and Budget Blinds. Chad Hallock, President and CEO of HFC, expresses their delight in being part of this remodel project: “We have a great history of being able to support national heroes including veterans, injured servicemen and women, and now Olympians. Every window treatment or closet that we donate allows us to give back to those who have given so selflessly. We all admire Amy’s courage and are honored to be able to give her something to support and celebrate her strength as she continues to inspire us.”
Special thanks goes to Tailored Living franchisee Kevin Kinney of Scottsdale for volunteering his time and expertise to design and install this beautiful custom master closet.

Get to your Keys, Jackets, and Rain Boots Faster with these Entryway Design Ideas and Accessories

The front entryway for many families is like grand central station where keys jackets, and rain boots can quickly clutter an area that would be better suited to make a great first impression for unexpected guests. Whether you live with a large family or a busy one, or you entertain guests often, an attractive and functional entryway design can make the difference between chaos and bliss. Since the goal of designing a custom entryway or mudroom is not only to welcome friends and family, but also to move out into each day as smoothly as possible, Tailored Living recommends meeting with your local home organization specialist to design an entryway that caters to your family’s distinct needs.
One of the primary concerns most families face is what to do with all the shoes, including rain boots as we head into the rainy months. While all of us have the best intentions to keep shoes neatly organized in our bedrooms, it’s almost inevitable that pairs get left behind and contribute to a growing pile of stilettos, sneakers, and sandals. While Tailored Living has helped many families customize shoe racks for the mudroom and the closet, we also commonly recommend incorporating a bench into your entryway design––one that helps guests or family members off their feet while also saving space.
But even if shoes are under control, entryway benches can still serve an important home organization purpose. Simply by replacing open shoe space with custom drawers, you can store anything from items you always seem to forget racing out of the house, to those that just don’t seem to fit elsewhere in the home.
During your consultation, be sure to ask about the differences in materials, finishes, and textures. Tailored Living has one of the largest selections of entryway design solutions in North America, and we are dedicated to helping you design and install the perfect one for you. Call your local organization specialist today for more information or also to schedule a complimentary consultation. By watching our home organization specialists utilize our proprietary 3D design software, you’ll be able to visualize your home’s unique potential.

Turn Your Custom Closet into a Vanity with these Accessories

Ever dream of having a custom vanity area where you could sit and perform your beauty rituals? Many times the closet is an overlooked space that would be perfectly suited for housing the vanity area to save space in your room. If you find that your wardrobe space has unused square footage and it goes back roughly 3 feet, then this might be an ideal space for a custom closet vanity to be installed.
Most closets have either a large sliding door or two doors to enclose the space. When creating a custom closet to incorporate a vanity it would be ideal to remove the doors from their hinges and replace the area with a long, dramatic, decorative curtain instead. A vanity is commonly an elegant area where you sit to make yourself more beautiful, so pick a curtain with various adornments and features such as rhinestones, pearls, or brightly colored patterns. Make sure the curtain is long enough to drape across the floor. This is also more convenient compared to leaving the doors in the closet.
Customize your closet into a vanity with closet accessories like custom drawers for jewelry. An easy solution to commonly tangled or lost accessories is the jewelry drawer. A shallow pullout with custom jewelry dividers, you can use as few or as many as you need. It’s an ideal way to protect your valuable pieces, as well as to keep track of them.
An alternate solution to the pullout mirror or mounted mirror is one that hosts your reflection on one side and your toiletries on the other. Using a mirror as a multi-purpose closet accessory frees up space in both your bathroom and your closet’s essential storage space. Store your extra beauty products--including hair tools, makeup, and nail supplies--in separate baskets above the closet vanity.
Consulting with a custom closet organization professional will ensure your home improvement efforts save time, money, and space. At Tailored Living we pride ourselves in taking the time to ask the right questions about your needs and lifestyle so that the investment in your space is one hundred percent personalized. Closet Designs to Keep You Organized Throughout Every Season

Winter is behind us, spring has sprung, and summer is the right time to add a new twist to closet organization to keep you organized throughout every season!  The change in seasons often requires a new wardrobe and a new closet design.
When it comes to closet organization, the professionals at Tailored Living recommend first, separating out your heavier winter clothes, outerwear, and boots.  These items can be stored away easily in pull-out bins or on overhead shelving units. Sturdy pulls-out baskets are ideal for stowing bulky sweaters and other seasonal items that take up too much hanging space.  Built-in cabinetry and integrated shoe racks are the perfect solution for keeping the shoes that you will no longer need, out of sight and organized.
Next, move your lighter hanging garments to the front of your closet to ensure that they’re easy to access.  Custom closet design from Tailored Living incorporate areas for long and short hanging items so that everything in your wardrobe has a place.  Consider moving your shorts, t-shirts, and other casual items to the drawers in your main wardrobe unit or fold them neatly and place on lower shelves.
Lastly, you’ll want to display your brightest spring accessories!  Overhead shelves enclosed by glass front doors are ideal for storing purses and hats to ensure they’re close at hand for the next special occasion or warm weather outing. Integrated valet rods work great for securely hanging scarves and ties and can be key to maintaining closet organization.
By incorporating these closet design ideas into your space, you will feel more organized, spend less time searching through a cluttered closet, and get out the door faster to enjoy the weather now that summer is upon us!  Tailored Living’s closet organization solutions are the perfect way to keep you organized throughout every season. We offer storage and organization solutions for the laundry room, pantry, closet, garage and home office.
